1. To regularly treat my cat/dog for fleas and ticks For effective flea control use one of the quality brand name topspot products (ie Advantage, Advantix for dogs or Frontline). These should be used once a month, all year round (even in the cooler months) to prevent fleas breeding in the environment. Most flea problems in peoples homes are due to pets not being treated properly over the cooler months, or not using the flea products as per the directions. Need any help, just give us a call. |

3. To brush my pets teeth once daily The best way to prevent dental disease for pets, as it is in people is regular teeth brushing. To brush pets teeth, use a small finger toothbrush (like a thimble) and chicken or beef toothpaste. Pets teeth should be brushed once daily, usually at dinner time to get in to the routine of daily brushing. Other forms of brushing include dental diets (like Hills t/d), chews (like Greenies) or meaty bones. Whatever form of dental care used, pets teeth should be checked regularly—lift up the lip, and check both front and back teeth.

4. To regularly groom my fluffy dog (every three months) Fluffy dogs—like Maltese terriers, poodles, labradoodles, shihtzus should be groomed regularly. Unless they are being brushed daily, their coat will quickly matt. Most fluffy dogs should be groomed every three months—which is much easier on both the groomer and the dog, instead of having a matted coat. We groom on most days Monday to Friday at the Roseville Veterinary Surgery.

5. To Feed my pet a healthy diet Pets, like people benefit from a healthy diet. The best food for pets is a nutritionally balanced, high quality premium pet food. We recommend the Hills Science range of pet foods which contain quality balanced nutrition, enriched with antioxidants (for a healthy immune system) omega fatty acids (for a healthy coat), and without salt excesses (that many supermarket foods contain). |
9. Pick up after my pet Regardless of what type of pet you have, they need cleaning up after. Please always pick up after your dog when they go for a walk—especially at the park or beach. It’s the few people who don’t do the right thing that spoil it for everyone else. Cats will appreciate a clean litter tray—and they are more likely to keep using their tray if you keep it clean for them! |
6. To help my pet maintain an ideal weight Maintaining an ideal body weight is essential for pets health as well as it is for people. Many pets are overweight (as are many people) which impacts on their health, contributing to many preventable diseases such as diabetes, pancreatitis, cancers, arthritis and heart disease. We are the experts at helping pets lose weight—if your pet needs to lose weight, pop in and ask us for details |
7. To visit the vet for a regular health exam Pets need a regular check-up—just like people. As pets age much faster than humans, an annual health exam is equivalent to a 3-5 year check-up with a persons’ doctor. Older pets often are being treated for medical problems, and may well need a health exam at least every 6 months. |
10. Give my pet a hug When life gets busy its often easy to forget about pets. Most pets will appreciate a hug, pat, stroke or brush—or all of the above. Pets aren’t with us for very long—so don’t take them for granted! |
8. To exercise my pet All pets need regular exercise. While its sometimes hard to find the time, dogs should be walked at least every 2nd day (if not daily). Cats benefit from play time. Birds should be allowed to fly around (if caged, a long cage can assist with this). |
